new chip seal on frontage from Tano to Pojaque
Various reports of new chip seal with deep gravel on sections of 285 frontage between Tano and Pojaque. I have not independently verified it but sources are reliable.
Oct 12 A ride to Sandia canceled. Local A rides TBD. see below.
Based on the current weather forecast, it is also possible that all rides will be canceled due to high winds. You will have to check this website on the morning of the 12th for information.
Notes on Oct 12 rides for A group
The ride to Sandia has only one signup so far. Mark is the leader and without more signups the ride will be cancelled. We will decide on Tuesday. A post will be made and hopefully you will see it in time. Or check the blog page.
The local A ride leaves at 10:00, not 0900. There are two options. Bonanza Crk plus cell tower or 599 to Stagecoach. Rich I is leading. If he chooses to lead Bonanza Creek there will be no ride to Stagecoach. If he chooses to go to Stagecoach then I will lead the Bonanza Creek ride.
So you lucky A riders have at least two or maybe three choices. Enjoy.

Sorry, forgot to add start which is 10:00 for tomorrow, Thursday.
Thursday, Sept 28, Villanueva Ad Hoc ride
Some of us are doing the Villanueva ride this Thursday. Many members did not do this ride this year for various reasons and some new members have never done this ride. It is a favorite that goes along the Pecos River and passes rural farms. Head east on I-25 past Pecos, and take exit #323, it may say Rt 3, or Ribera. After you exit, stay right for a few hundred feet and you will see a dirt parking lot on the left near the frontage road. The distance from DeVargas to the exit is 45 miles, so allow about an hour travel time (+/-) depending where you live. The ride distance is 27 miles round trip to Villanueva State Park, mostly slight to moderate downhill going out, 1300′ elevation gain, so not bad. See GPS link below. Depending on who comes there may be two groups; the Relaxed Riders, and the Real Relaxed Riders. (The Real Relaxed Riders generally see no need to pedal furiously on a downhill greater than -3%).

Moab Trip, Sept. 11-16th
18 SOBs travelled to Moab, Utah for 4 days of road cycling and fun! Some of us stayed in a town hotel and a few stayed in RV parks, but we got together every night to raise a glass to a glorious day. We all biked the Potash road along the Colorado River the first day. The road took us past petroglyphs, arches and rock climbers. The next day, we all took different routes. One group rode a new paved bike path for 11 miles out to the canyon past Arches towards Canyonlands. It drizzled rain on us all the way out and back! And there was a vegetarian dinosaur. That night we did a BarBQ dinner and a night cruise on the Colorado. The
walls were lighted with amazing lights and we heard tall tails. It was fun. The next day we rode in Canyonlands to the the Grand Vista – see some of our group in the picture. The last day was a day of exploration – new routes, hiking or riding in Arches National Park! And the drive home is one of the most beautiful drives in our country!

September 28 B ride
Is cancelled due to inability to find a ride leader and apparent lack of interest.
B riders are free to self-organize a ride through the e-mail list. If there is a ride leader willing to lead, it will be a sanctioned SOB ride; if not, not.
B riders are also free to join the C ride in Pilar. It is a lovely ride along the Rio Grande in the Orilla Verde Recreation Area. The paved road is six miles long, so it’s a 12 mile out and back (or a 24 mile if you do it twice or a 36 mile if you do it three times). There’s sometimes different wildlife to look at each time you do it (big horn sheep, eagles, ducks, other birds).
Cycling related message from Homewise developer.
Hello,
My name is Isaac Hammond-Paul, and I am the Director of Community Development at Homewise. I’m reaching out to invite your membership to a free talk: “How Our Cities Became Parking Lots” taking place on October 4th from 6-8PM at the Scottish Rite Center in Santa Fe. Henry Grabar, journalist, and author of the new highly anticipated book Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World, will discuss the impact of parking on the character of neighborhoods, the size and cost of new construction, traffic, transportation, and even the course of floodwaters. He’ll also share how cities like Santa Fe can reform parking in ways that actually make it more convenient for drivers while increasing affordability, walkability, and livability. You can sign up to attend the event here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/
Also, we are hosting a casual group ride to the event and see first hand some of Santa Fe’s own paved paradises. The ride will meet at 5pm at the Railyard Water
Tower and roll at 5:15pm sharp. Free bike valet provided by Bike Santa Fe will be available at the event location. Bring your lights to get back home and a lock for good measure!
Please feel free to reach out if you have questions or would like an image/flyer you can post to social media accounts.
Thanks,
Isaac Hammond-Paul

Message from Yuko Crosswhite
To all those who wrote tributes to Edwin, I am heartened by the expressions of appreciation and fondness for a man who lived and breathed the SOBs and all things bicycling .
When Edwin would come home from a riding or other SOB event, he was soon busying himself with other SOB business, and I did not hear a lot about the happenings that took place or the personal contacts he made.
Your comments helped me to understand and appreciate more, what a dedicated and big hearted person he was.
To me he was all that and more. His kind, nurturing qualities helped me to grow as an individual over the 57 years of marriage, and our love continued to grow. Losing him is the most difficult thing I am having to experience.
I am grateful to the SOBs for bringing joy and purpose into his life. Your comments fill me with affection and make this time more bearable.
With sincere appreciation,
Yuko Crosswhite
Celebrate Edwin
Our Thursday ride starts in El Dorado. Since many of us missed the Tuesday ride to celebrate Edwin, let’s do it after this ride. If you can stay for coffee/lunch after the ride, meet at Cafe Fina. We can share our memories of the wonderful man who mentored, led and helped us make the SOBs the club it is. Join us after the Thursday ride!
Tuesday Aug 22 – ride in honor of Edwin
We will leave DeV at the stroke of 0900 for Café Fina (where else?). Coffee then figure out our return based on the wind. Join us for the ride or meet us at Café Fina. We should be there no later than 10.30.
Remembrances of Edwin
Many SOB’s have contributed their remembrance of Edwin on this page. If you would like to add something feel free to email admin at santafesobs.com and we will add your thoughts to the page. If you do not want your message on the page, email the same address and request that it be removed and we will do that as well. Stay Safe
Remembering Edwin Crosswhite
Edwin Crosswhite Passed Away on August 18, 2023

Edwin Crosswhite prepares for his last bike ride.
Yuko Crosswhite and Edwin enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Yuko took the picture of Edwin above as he prepared to go on what was to become his last bike ride. At this time he was diagnosed with Lymphoma and given the prognosis that he had few choices available. Edwin, along with Yuko, chose Assisted Death by Physician. Members who want to send cards to Yuko, please use this mailing address: 2105 Paseo Ponderosa, Santa Fe, NM 87501.
In his will, Edwin said he did not want a funeral or any kind of ceremony. Still, we can comment, especially since he was such a wonderful person in the memories of all of us.
Yuko has graciously provided some of the information to provide us with information out of Edwin’s past.
Edwin taught elementary schools in Fullerton, California and Santa Fe. He still found, long after he had retired, his connection to the education of children by teaching chess at least once a week after school in various locations in Santa Fe, including Eldorado, almost until he died.. He just thought being right there with them was born in him. Edwin worked two contractual terms teaching in the Cairo American College in Cairo, Egypt. He helped found a bicycle riding club in Egypt. We often saw him riding here wearing his Cairo jersey. Talk about a hot ride! Edwin could do that! Edwin recognized that the club was attracting older riders who wanted to resume long ago passions for riding but who were excited about the “Group D” that Edwin formed. These riders would arrive at the Thursday rides and Edwin, with assistance from other members, would plan and lead a ride just for them. Just the right ride–just the right guy to lead it.
And we all remember Edwin in his SOB kit sitting at the registration for the Santa Fe Century to invite new members to join. Or Edwin attending meetings of the Santa Fe Cycling Community urging concerns for safety and better road conditions. And he organized and led training sessions for Ride Leader certification. And who can forget going to a city park to organize and direct a safety program for children between five and 10 years old, showing them how to wear a helmet for the first time?
Edwin was a veteran, having served for four years during “peace time.” Edwin told Yuko that to toughen up in the Navy, he boxed. But he was quickly knocked out and immediately found other interests before discharge. He volunteered many hours and weeks to Boy Scouts of America and to many other educational activities. While in high school, he played as a running back on the local team. I wish I could tell him that I recently read that NFL teams no longer use or want running backs. I know he would get a laugh.
Most of us knew Edwin as one who knew everything there was to know about bicycling. He could build a bike from scratch as he did the one he rode with us. He could repair and replace parts. . Edwin could give anyone a tip or method to improve the fun of the ride. Riding through new scenery, he would stop at a local winery to taste the products and even bring a bottle stashed on his bike. We wouldn’t be surprised to find ourselves with riding 5 or 8 more miles to get to a winery whose sign he saw out on the highway.
When Yuko and Edwin decided to move to Santa Fe, they were already living here. Yuko was enrolled in he Southwest Acupuncture College, and Edwin was teaching in the district. Yuko’s father had been interned during World War II in the nice-sounding War Relocation Camp here in Santa Fe. Connections have a way of re-connecting. They liked it up in the hills above on the Ski Road.
In his earlier days with the SOBs, Edwin used to ride the group ride–but that was after his downhill ride from his house. And after the ride over, after coffee or lunch, Edwin then got on his bike and rode all the way back up to their house. His decision to drive his car to and from the house made the rest of us feel stronger, somehow.
If members feel inclined, post a couple of sentences on this SOB website to share them.
Edwin always made us each feel better. Thank you, Edwin.

Mural Volunteers needed from SOB Group or friends
First off, a big thank you to all the SOB people that have helped me out so far. I couldn’t complete this three year project without your help and support. I am looking to get a big section of the rail trail mural done by mid September(fingers crossed). You can find the times I am out there working each week by going on the website: https://www.generations.equalarea.com
You can also donate monetarily if you can’t physically. I just got a non-profit fiscal sponsor if you want to write off the donation for taxes. This week Wednesday and Friday, which are non-ride days, I will be there.
Cheers, Julie Deery
Really? Almost September ??
Well at least it’s close enough for ride leaders to sign up for September rides.
Click this link, submit the form.
And welcome to two new A group ride leaders – Boyd Smith and Mark Stevens. Yeah! Say hey to them if you can catch up close enough to be heard. Good luck with doing that BTW.
Stay Safe.
Bandelier Loop 8/17 B group
Will be canceled unless five people sign up before Wednesday at 8 pm. Due to construction at Tsankawi and the general poor condition of the road between Tsankawi and White Rock, the B route will be changed to an out and back starting clockwise before reversing.
Start times redux
So I know I said we’d keep the rest of August at 0830. But it’s kinda dark in the mornings now AND the temps seem to have abated for the foreseeable future, so…. Effective August 18 and for the rest of August, unless you hear otherwise, we will start ad hoc rides at 0900. No changes to Thursday rides.
Hit & Run Go Fund Me
Perhaps you heard about the cyclist killed by a hit and run driver on Old Pecos Trail on August 1st.
Apparently his family is suffering financial hardships on top of everything else. Someone has set up a Go Fund Me page for them.
Cochiti Loop ride Aug. 10th
Today was gorgeous. All three groups got to ride the Cochiti/Santo Domingo Loop for the first time in three years. The fields were green with corn as high as an elephant’s eye, well, a little elephant, and everyone seemed happy to see us. As people passed us in cars and trucks they waved and smiled. And we finished before it got too hot. Here is the C group on the Rio Grande bridge heading into Santo Domingo. Everyone seemed to be enjoying it.
Cat-Ears for wind noise reduction
I noticed some riders at the luncheon wearing furry things on their helmets. I inquired and they are called Cat-Ears and are worn on your helmet’s strap in front of your ears in order to reduce wind noise. Never one not to try a new gadget I ordered them. My first experience today indicated they indeed work at reducing that annoying wind noise and I was very impressed at how simple and effective the design. Amazon link below, I ordered the Classic Slim model….and to answer the likely question from the ladies, “No, the only color is black.”

Cochiti Thurs ride loop possible
Ride Leaders: FYI about the route. On the way to ABQ today I drove the Cochiti ride. While Tent Rocks access is still closed, the road from the Visitors Center, through Cochiti and Kewa Pueblos was opened and the nice loop ride that we used to do is now possible.

Start time August ad hoc
Remains 0830 unless weather significantly changes. Thursday rides as indicated.
Neighbor to Neighbor Drive
The Neighbor to Neighbor Drive of the Food Depot is back! The SOBs participated last year and we helped make food available to our neighbors here and in Northern New Mexico. This year it is even more important. The Food Depot is helping to feed more of our neighbors in need throughout Northern NM. I hope that the SOBs will join and make this a great year.
Every dollar donated provides 4 meals. The goal of this Food Drive is to raise $300,000 to provide 1,200,00 meals. If you can donate any amount, just mention that you are an SOB and we will get credit for it. There will be a celebration on October 6th at the Food Depot for all participants with special awards for the groups raising the most money. But mainly, it is helping our neighbors in times of need. Neighbor to Neighbor runs from June 6th – Sept. 17th. You can mail a check, noting that you are an SOB to Food Depot 1222 Siler Rd SF 87507 or visit their web site at www.thefooddepot.org/n2n Thank you all. We can make a difference in our friends and neighbors’ lives.
Rider looking for support next week
I have pasted his email below. Feel free to contact him if you have any interest. He may also appreciate some folks to ride with him. (yes there is a ymail.com, I checked)
Hello. I’m an old guy, 67, from deep south Texas; Harlingen.
I’m coming to Santa Fe to climb a big hill; Santa Fe Ski area. Plan to do the ride/climb Monday morning 7th Aug; between 8-9 AM.
I’m looking for someone to ‘support’ me, going up; drive my truck, stop every 4-5 miles so I can get more drink/snacks. Figure it should take me 4 hours, possibly a little more. If no heart attacks.
If you know of anyone interested, I’d pay them $150 for the help.
Also, plan to try Sandia Peak Wed/Thurs (North approach and South approach). Same payment if any takers.
I know this is a long shot, not holding my breath. I’ll just carry lots of water in backpack.
Cheers,
Bobby

ebike riders and Strava
We welcome e-bikes and their owners on Strava. Here are some things to be aware of when you record and upload your e-bike rides to Strava:
E-bike rides have their own activity/sport type on Strava. You’ll want to ensure all your e-bike rides are categorized correctly.
- One way to do this is to record with a device or app that supports recording in e-bike mode, since these will automatically sync to Strava as e-bike rides.
- Recording with a device that doesn’t yet support e-bikes? No problem, simply record in “Ride” mode and change the activity/sport type to “E-Bike Ride” after the activity syncs to Strava.

Rabbit Road Repaving Update
I contacted my County Council Commissioner and somehow the Constituent Services LIasion person. There is a Public Works Dept meeting on July 21 with some of the County Council Commissioners. I was told that the Rabbit Road issue (read previous post) will be mentioned at this meeting. Now is the time to voice your concerns about the exclusion of the bike lanes in the resurfacing project. Contact your County Council Commissioner. Don’t know? Google Santa Fe County Council website and find out. Their contact info (email) is posted.

Photography before Thursday’s ride
The New Mexican will have a new publication called Vida sometime soon, and a reporter interviewed Judy and me last week for an article on the SOBs. His photographer wants to take pictures of the group before the ride on Thursday, and he also wants some action shots during the ride. I told him to show up at Rancho de Chimayo before 8:40 because the rides would depart at 9 on the dot. I also directed him to the website for the route and told him that he would be on his own for the “action” shots. Please cooperate, although if you don’t want to, that’s up to you.
Rabbit Road Repavement Unsafe
On a ride today down Rabbit Road from the intersection with Old Pecos Trail, we noticed that the road was repaved, but it did not extend to the bike lanes. Thus, there is a small lip at the edge of the bike lane when moving over to get on the road. Such a short-sighted repavement job was disappointing and dangerous. Perhaps it is not too late to have the Road Dept address this issue before lines are painted. This is a County issue and I have already sent a letter about this to my County Council Representative, but with copies to City Council Representative, and Mayor Weber to make them aware. I mentioned that this action is counter to the alleged Bike-Friendly stance of the county and city and disrespectful to the safety of the cycling community. I also mentioned that there is a possible county and city liability case if a cyclist is injured on this poorly paved section of road. The squeaky wheel gets the grease so write to your representatives if you want the road repaved properly and safely.

Many thanks to so many SOBs
So many of you have emailed me support that I am overwhelmed by the support. I like to say that SOBs are more than just a bike riding group. Individual members are so supportive of each other that we must be some kind of family. I don’t have a press agent, so I am serving as my own to write and appraise you of the situation.
Judy Costlow reported on my fall at the program recognizing deceased members last Thursday. As I turned to cast roses into the river, I slipped on the sand covering a large rocks. Judy and Lynn, did too, but I fell over flat on my chest and my forehead hit a rock protruding through the sand. Got a hole in my forehead skin, plus abrasions on my elbows. So many of those immediately jumped to my aid and retired nurses quickly patched my wounds.
Judy did not report on a related matter. The week before on June 29, I was riding with C group and we were within 3 miles of finishing at 599 rail parking. I remember seeing the National Guard building ahead. For some reason, I don’t remember much else except this: my front wheel was touching the rear wheel of Pam Proffit. Then my saddle was next to her saddle. Then I seemed to be going past her front wheel and to the right. I know now that I ran off the road and into the dirt and grass. Knocked out, I have been told that Dana and Kris moved me so that my head was pointed up.;Pam told me that she called 911. I have been told that Julie was there. And so were Shirley and Mike.
When I arrived at ER at St. Vincent’s, the ambulance crew gave me my helmet which contained my Garmin computer. I am very happy that it was rescued. While sitting in a wheelchair I looked at the Garmin and it gave me a message:” Congratulations! You have set a new personal speed record.” The Garmin was still running while the ambulance was taking me. 26 miles hour average speed over 22 miles. I will keep the log on my Garmin. I may submit it to a Tour de France team to document my speed. Maybe I will be there next year.
X-rays found no broken bones. A CT brain scan was negative for blood. From a concussion 5 years ago, I know a second scan is critical because blood may show later. That time it did and I had brain surgery to relieve it. I set up medical appointments to acquire a second scan. Then I attended the Pecos River ceremony and fell. From the first crash, I had blurred vision close up, and I went to appointment with my eye doctor last Thursday afternoon. Optic nerve and retina in both eyes were good. Blurring may disappear in a couple of weeks. He ordered a new scan. Friday morning I had monthly blood test for a thinner I have taken for 20 years. And the nurse and supervisor insisted I go next door to ER for an immediate scan. I did. Since it was a Thursday, the same doctor was on duty and he recognized me being there for another scan in just a week. I observed that his facial appearance suggested some frustration. I said to him. “I suppose that at my age you think I should be sitting in a recliner chair watching Fox News on tv. Dr. Severy laughed and told me he would get me back out on my bike as soon as possible and that he applauded seniors who ride bikes.
But he had bad news. Blood showed up. Immediate treatment to “reverse” the blood thinner and other medicines inserted into veins and by 10 pm I was in a room in the newer west wing. Great room. At 5:30 a.m Saturday morning a new scan that showed bleeding had stopped. No surgery necessary. Sonogram done on old clot and that round the old clot was dissolved. Taken off thinner and then home. Some followup appointments ahead and another scan. And, in time, I will be back on my bike. And here’s something exciting. St. Vincent’s has an excellent high speed wi-fi for guests. While there, I could read all my newspapers and magazines, I would watch the Tour de France on Peacock, I watched a Met Opera and concerts and ballets from Europe on the several streaming channels I have on both my phone and tablet. I have decided, and recommend that you do so too–always carry your tablet with you because you never know when you will end up in ER and your mind will appreciate the entertainment.
Thank you all once again.

Note route changes for Thrs July 13
Road construction has closed roads that we had originally planned to use. New routes are posted in the usual place. Labels say “July” at the end of the route. All 3 rides are impacted and have been revised. A group change also due to the ride on July 27 going partly on same route.
Stay safe.

SOB Memory Ride 2023
Today a large group(s) of around 30 riders, widely spaced on the narrow road, cycled from the Pecos Ranger station towards Terraro, for the annual SOB Memory Ride.
The ride out was done in silence (apart from the shouting of car warnings) and was a pleasant gently climbing experience out to the Pecos River bridge just before Terraro.
At this point we parked our bikes and moved down to the river. Bill Pollack gave an introduction and listed the SOB riders who had passed away, with a short comment on the particular characteristics that past members brought to the group. The next step was for Bill and Judy to cast a rose into the waters in memory of each past member. At this point Bill slipped down the bank and almost went into the river with the roses. Gravel/Mountain Bike Ride
Gravel/mountain bike ride on Saturday, 7/8/2023, 8:30 am on the Rail Trail from the Rabit Road trailhead to Lamy and back. About 28 miles round trip. Call 505-231-9341 if you have questions.
Pecos B rides
I will be leading the B ride. Rob will lead the B- ride. Rob’s ride will go to Terrero. My ride usually goes to the campground, but sometimes to Cowles, and sometimes all the way up to Jack’s Creek. It’s an out and back, so one can turn around at any time. Scott says there are lots of potholes, so that might cause my ride to be shortened.
Start Times remain 0900 for now for July
unless it is an out of town ride. See the listing.

Hincapie order is in Santa Fe
For some reason they shipped all the stuff to me. I will bring it to DeVargas Tuesday 20th before the 0900 ad hoc ride. I will pass it off to someone to bring to Galisteo on Thursday the 22nd as I will not be there. I have no idea who ordered what so if you want something bring an email from Hincapie showing what you ordered. I will talk to Hincapie so this does not happen again next time.
Ride leaders time to sign up for July rides
Here is the link. Thanks. https://santafesobs.com/ride-leaders-signup/
June start times will remain 0900
Forecast for the next 10 days is still for highs in the low 80’s, so we plan to leave the start times at 0900 for local rides. Later for out of town.
Energetic ad hoc Sunday June 11 start location changed
to DeVargas. Same time. No change for Saturday.
Sunday rides for energetic group
For the rest of June, as a trial, we will have a Sunday ride from ECA at 0900. This is in addition to the existing Saturday ride. Ride one, ride both, ride neither. As you see fit.
We will evaluate after June. Relaxed group is still pondering AFAIK.
Survey results & ride signups
Click here to view survey results
The board is in ponder mode. Will advise post ponder.
There was an issue with ride signups that started on Friday June 2. It was resolved yesterday. If you tried to sign up for a ride and could not, try try again.
June start times
This has nothing to do with the current survey and everything to do with the weather. Current forecast through first half of June is much cooler. Lows in the upper 40’s, highs barely into the low 70’s. So there is no reason to start at 0830 at least thru June 15. Local rides including ad hoc will start 0900 thru and including June 15. Will advise then about the rest of June. Take care.
B and C Ride Leaders for June and July
Here’s the tentative lineup:
June 1: B Gary K; C Dana
June 8: B Rob; C Ian/Lore
June 15: B Lynn; C Ian
June 22: B Charles B; Ruben C
June 29: B Rob; C Shirley
July 6: B Lynn/Rob; C Judy
July 13: B John V; C Ian/Ruben C
July 20: B Lynn; C Judy
July 27: B Denise; C Shirley
Start points, times, and routes can be found (or linked) under the Ride Schedule tab.
Start time survey
It has been requested to survey the club about changing summer start times to no earlier than 0900. We have been starting local Thursday and ad hoc rides at 0830 during the hotter part of the summer, e.g. June and July. In addition to the question about start times there are 2 more questions (a total of 3). We have ridden several times on Sunday due to weather issues and there is a very noticeable difference in the amount of traffic on Sunday (much less) vs. Saturday. So there are 2 questions about Sunday rides.
If you are interested in voicing your opinion, click this link and answer the questions. We will not start different groups at different times, all groups will start at the same time, so whatever result there is will apply to all 3 groups. I have required that you enter your email address to fill out the survey to limit ballot box stuffing.
The survey will remain open for one week, then we will tally the results. Once we have the results the board will decide if any changes are to be made. This will take a few days to complete, so the June 1 ride will start as currently scheduled at 0830.
Major Change to Texas 4000 bike ride
It has become necessary to cancel meeting the riders of the Texas 4000 when they arrive on Wednesday, July 31. It has been reported that the group is not staying at a motel. Instead they will be staying at a private residence. The owner of the residence has not approved publicizing the address of the residence. Without that information, it is impossible to think of leading the Texas 4000 riders on their arrival.
But the dinner on Thursday, June 1 at Las Campanas Country Club is still on. The cost of the dinner is $60. Please notify me at pollockb@aol.com, if you plan to attend the dinner and I will forward it to the Texas Alumni.
Website logins
All of the information needed to participate in SOB rides is available on the website without a login. Most SOB members do not have a login to the website, nor do they need one. Only people who REGULARLY post to the blog should have an account on the website in order to minimize spam.
We had a comment section in the blog, however, it has been removed for new posts to avoid confusion. Due to the login requirement the comment section is not really appropriate for a large number of people to comment on a blog post. Due to the high maintenance cost of running a discussion group, we do not have one, especially since over time these tend to degrade into twitter.
Further, we routinely scrub the list of people who have accounts and if they have not had any activity for a year or so, then we delete their account. So while we appreciate the desire to solicit comments from membership, unfortunately, the blog is not the place to do it. The board is discussing a survey relative to the start time question that was recently raised and will advise in a day or so.
For questions about how the club is governed please refer to the bylaws (link).
Latest Report on Texas 4000 Arrival
The riders in the Rockies Route of the Texas 4000 ride from Austin, TX to Anchorage, AK is underway and the riders on Thursday night are still in Texas, but moving quickly to New Mexico. A major change in the route has canceled the night in Albuquerque before arriving in Santa Fe. Instead, the riders will make their way from Santa Rosa, NM to Las Vegas, NM and will ride from Las Vegas to Santa Fe. Many SOBs have ridden from Las Vegas back to Santa Fe, and are, therefore, quite familiar with the route.Looking at the cue sheet they have posted, it is just like our experiences and we know the hills they much climb,
As in the past, SOB riders meet the Texas 4000 as they approach Eldorado and escort the group via Old Santa Fe Trail to the Plaza and then to their motel. I understand that they will be staying at the Motel 6 in the Railyard area. But I do not yet have firm confirmation, though I hope to get it in the next day or two.
The riders will arrive on Wednesday, May 31. Based on what one can remember riding the route, the group will arrive near Eldorado between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. We will meet at Cafe Fina as they will be approaching from Glorieta on Old Las Vegas Highway. I have asked that a rider telephone me as early as possible when they know their arrival time. If the group arrives by 4:00, we should reach their motel between 4:45 and 5:15.
The group has a day of rest in Santa Fe and then dinner around 6:30 at the spectacular Las Campanas Country Club, Thuursday, June 1. SOB members and spouses/friends are invited to attend the dinner. The bar will open about 5:30 and dinner about 6:30. Similar to many restaurants in Santa Fe, the cost of the dinner is $60. Early notification of plans to attend the dinner are helpful so that the Club can order the quantity of food needed. The local Alumni of the University of Texas sponsor the dinner at the Club and several of those members also attend the dinner. The riders will split themselves among the tables so that each of us have an opportunity to engage in conversation with the riders. The training each rider has undergone reinforces their self-confidence and communication skills. They are a delight to engage in conversation. The riders are diverse group with many interesting experiences to report, including events on the 10 days of riding. And, of course, they have their own experiences with cancer. And most important, their future plans for careers that didn’t exist a few years ago.
If you plan to attend the dinner, please notify me at pollockb@aol.com and I will provide your name(s) to the Club.
In the next couple of days, look at this SOB website for a confirmation on the motel site so that you can arrange to return home after the ride. My personal plan is to park my car at the DeVargas Center and be driven back to Cafe Fina where I will await the riders. Other SOB members may want to consider a similar arrangement.
If you have any questions about this activity, please call me at (505) 470-6241–or email me at the email address above.

Comments requested about 8:30 ride start times
It seems that some ride start times for June and July are at 8:30. The reason for this is to have a little cooler temps for riding. While this may be the case, I submit that routinely starting any local ride before 9:00 puts us on the road near the end of the morning rush where many people tend to drive recklessly to get to work on time (I used to be one of them). That is why it is called “rush hour.” I don’t think that a few degrees lower temperature is worth the risk of being on a bicycle at that time of day. In the case of a severe heat wave, a ride could be posted to start earlier, but many people will likely not ride at all.
What are the thoughts of you B and C riders since these rides are shorter and less effected by the temperature?

Texas 4000 Returns May 31
Riders in the Texas 4000 bicycle ride arrive in Santa Fe on Wednesday, May 31. The ride did not pass through Santa Fe, but it will this year. The Texas 4000 is a bike ride beginning in Austin, Texas and riding to Anchorage, Alaska. The riders are upper-division and graduate students at the University of Texas who raise funds for cancer research, usually raising close to $1 million each year. There are three separate rides: the Rockies ride comes through Santa Fe, then to Denver and into Canada where the three rides join in White Horse, Yukon and then form a single group into Anchorage, arriving there in mid-August. Each group has about 26-28 riders.
Santa Fe is a major stop and they will spend two nights here. Susy Battaglia honors the commitment of Frank Battaglia deceased member of SOBs, to cover the costs of the motel here in Santa Fe where the riders stay for two nights. The Battaglila family has made this gesture for almost 10 years. In recent years, the riders are about 60% women and 40% men. Almost all of the riders have immediate or close family members who have dealt with cancer. Many of the riders, though only in their 20s, are also cancer survivors. They know the importance of cancer research in treating others.
SOB members in the past have met the riders when they arrive in Eldorado and lead the Texans to their motel near the Railyard. It is an feeling of excitement leading the Texans wearing their club jerseys down Old Santa Fe Trail and into the Plaza. Visitors to Santa Fe are much impressed just seeing the group arrive at one time. In the past visitors have stopped the riders and donated some money to them as they walk in front of the Palace. Just a short hop to the motel.
The local alumni of the University of Texas host the Texas riders and SOB riders and spouses/partners to a fabulous dinner at the Las Campanas Country Club on the second night, Thursday, June 1. There is nothing more enjoyable and refreshing than spending a couple of hours with young adults excited about their adventure and looking forward to their careers and lives that are in the future.
Watch the SOB website during the next couple of weeks to read more about the arrival of the Texas 4000. Think seriously about meeting the riders on mid–afternoon on May 31 in Eldorado and the ride into town. with them. SOB members can set things up by parking a car at the Agora Market area and hitching a ride back from the Railyard to retrieve the car. Or, ride both ways starting from the DeVargas Center. The dinner is a wonderful setting at the Las Campanas Club.

Thursday rides
We still ask that you signup BEFORE Thursday for the rides that day. Just in case we need to contact you about a cancellation or a change then we know who is planning to ride.
Also, as we indicate in several places, we strongly recommend checking the SOB website, the Mastodon feed, your email, even your text app before a ride to see if there has been any communication regarding the upcoming ride.

Ideas:
- You can share one jersey every other ride with your buddy.
- Or buy used. I have one that is stretched out I will sell for 50% off. First come, first served. Size M. (joke)

B Ride adjustment
From Denise: Welcome to the 2023 SOB cycling season. I will be the ride leader for the April 6 ride. Bob has posted a time change to 11:00 for the departure time. As ride leader, I have decided to drop the portion of the ride up the steep climb to the top of Old Santa Fe Trail. This eliminates about three miles. We will regroup at Two Trails then follow the remaining route. I make this adjustment knowing many are coming off a ride free winter, and with the hope you will take on the challenge of this season’s first ride.
Thursday April 6 start time delayed to 11 am.
Tell your friends. T’will be a bit warmer by 11.
Ladies Specialized Ruby

Ride Monday April 3 instead of Tuesday.
Ride starts from the BLM Parking lot at 10 am. We plan about 35 miles before the wind starts gusting up!

Fall SOB Trip – Moab Utah
Hi Everyone, I am looking into planning our annual SOB trip to Moab, Utah. It will be a fixed base ride from
Sept. 11th to the 16th, 5 nights and 4 full days of road cycling. I need to know who is interested
at this point. It is not a commitment, I just need an idea of people who would like to come. I will be inquiring about
hotels at this time to make sure we can get rooms. You must be a member of our club to ride with us. My email is:
- j.costlow@gmail.com
Tour de Zona routes
For anyone interested I have copied the routes to our RWGPS site and organized them into an “event”. It is located here: https://ridewithgps.com/events/207278-el-tour-de-zona-2023
If you know how to load a GPS route to your head unit then have at it if you want to have it available for the event.
Saturday Feb 25 ABQ energetic ride ALTERNATIVE
Not cancelling ECA ride but might not be very many folks there. Not sure. Since it will be a bit warmer in ABQ on Saturday we will start at Sandia RR at 1120. Choice of drive or train down and back. Train is due at Sandia at 1110. Return leaves Sandia at 1530. The ride I propose goes up Tramway and then part way down, across town to Bike in Coffee, and then back up the Bosque. Given the amount of goatheads in ABQ, tubeless tires recommended. Attached is the route, as sanity checked by Mr Abq, aka Fuel90rider. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42069777
Someday it will be warm again, we think
NOTE: There are 2 posts in this email. This is #1.
In anticipation of pending warmth, we have posted the April rides on the website. We are still asking you to sign up for rides in advance. Same process as last year. You just have to read the website information. I know you can do it.
Also, if you have not renewed your 2022 membership, now’s the time! And you elite eightys need to submit your waivers!
Ride Leaders: Time for you to signup to lead April rides. Click here. Even if you have had a mind meld with Judy you need to sign up on this page in order to lead a ride or rides.
