Book Talk Two Wheels Good: The History and Mystery of the Bicycle Author Jody Rosen with SOB Jim Falk

Wednesday, August 31
FREE Virtual Program, 5PM MDT
Open to the public but pre-registration is required.

Almost half of households own a bicycle, far more than have a car. The Economist.

As international travel and cycling are often found together, our upcoming virtual conversation with journalist and author Jody Rosen is a program that you will not want to miss.

Two Wheels Good examines the past and future of the bicycle through the lens of colorful historic characters. We meet a Bhutanese king known for racing mountain bikes in the Himalayas, a rickshawallah in Bangladesh who earns but $7/day and the Scottish daredevil Danny MacAskill who built a lucrative career performing stunts the videos of which attract millions of views within days of release.  We will talk about the role that bicycles played in social movements such as women’s emancipation; massive protests including Tiananmen Square and Black Lives Matter and how they were used as effective instruments of war by, for example, the Vietcong.

Jody Rosen is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine. His work has appeared in SlateNew YorkThe New Yorker, and many other publications. Once an aspiring songwriter, he composed lyrics while a bicycle messenger in New York City!

Jim’s note: After reading superb reviews in The Economist and The New York Times, I felt a conversation with the author would be well-received by World Affairs Council members and others who might share my own passion for bicycles and cycling. Jody’s research is meticulous and I especially appreciated his talent for bringing in the history of the bicycle and its impact on social movements through interviews and personal memories.

El malpais ride

The NM Touring society out of ABQ is hosting a ride in the El Malpais volcano area on Aug 27, 9:00 am. It sounds great if you like that type of scenery/terrain. 36/59 miles RT, no services, but at La Ventana arch at 36 mile turnaround there’s toilets and water. Meet at I-40 and 117 exit 89. Sounds like a great ride. Find out more on the NMTS.org website under onetime rides. They told me to invite some of my Santa Fe riding buddies. So there. I have.

Return of Saturday Gravel

At least for one week.  This Saturday.  From El Cam Academy.  Hopefully easy, definitely short, 25 mile or so ride out 62 as we have done several times in the past.  There will likely be a road ride as well from ECA on Saturday.  So, your choice.  Same start time.

Ride 14 to Albuquerque with RR return

Several people have been asking me about the Albuquerque Railrunner ride. This coming Tuesday, August 16 looks like a good day. Temps should be in the 70’s – 80’s with very light winds. Plan is to start at the 599 RR station at 8:00am, ride to Abq and catch the 2:35 Abq Los Ranchos train back. Ride is 70 miles with 3,300 feet of climbing. Good part is the last 20 miles are downhill with a pizza n beer stop near the end. There’s a backup train at 4:41 and another at 5:49 but I think moving along steadily at a 15-17mph pace will get us there in plenty of time. Planned stops for breaks/regrouping will be Bonanza Creek store, Madrid, Golden, Sandia Triangle gas station, Slice pizza, Whiting coffee, RR station. Here’s RWGPS: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30507279

Drop me an email if you’re planning on riding to: fuel90rider@yahoo.com so I’ll know who to expect.

Loose Dangerous Dogs On 599 frontage

Going up the 599 frontage from So Meadow toward La Tierra yesterday. Several dogs came after us just before we got to the first Aldea entrance.  A rider was seriously bitten and went to hospital. Animal control was contacted. BOLO in that area.  Maybe stay away till we find out what happens with owners.

Buffalo Thunder start

The start point for all groups for Thursday’s ride is the parking lot across from the pond. Take the second exit out of the traffic circle and drive north. The parking lot will be on the right side of the road and the pond on the left.

August ride leaders

The tentative ride leaders for August are:
August 4 – A: John V; B Lynn P; C Lore T
August 11 – A: John V; B Lynn P: C Julie J
August 18 – A Rich I; B Rob B; C Lynn P
August 25 – A Christine V; B TBD; C Shirley K

Ride Start Times

If you want to ride with most of your groups, please read.  Otherwise enjoy your own ride.

This week (the last week of July FWIW).  Ad hoc rides start 0845.  Thursday ride starts 0900 from Pecos Ranger Sta.

August.  Ad hoc rides start 0845.   MOST Thursday rides also start at 0845.  I will leave it to you to research and find the one that does not start at 0845.  Consider it homework.   Thursday rides for August have been posted.

Ride leaders please sign up for leading August rides here.

No more whining about start times.  We (Judy, Lynn, Bob) are NOT going to change them for August.  Changing the start times has caused a lot of confusion.  End of story.

Note:  The format of the registration section for signing up for Thursday rides has been changed by a software update.  I will try to revise it to be a little smaller but it will take time.

B riders.  Only 1 rider has signed up for Pecos this Thursday.  If we do not get 4 more then B ride will be cancelled.

Covid Reminder

It’s still out there.  When you submitted your Covid waiver you agreed to the following conditions.  Please re-read and please adhere.  Your fellow old people thank you.

By signing the below waiver I agree that I will adhere to the following requirements BEFORE participating in any group ride:

  • I have not been exposed to a person who has tested positive for Covid-19 or has symptoms consistent with Covid-19 for at least 14 days BEFORE a ride.
  • I agree to abide by any applicable New Mexico Public Health Order (PHO) requiring a quarantine period based on my travel outside NM and/or regarding wearing a mask and regarding any other requirements of any NM PHO.
  • I do not currently have one or more of the following Covid-19 symptoms (fever above 100F, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat, body aches, loss of taste or smell) AND I have been symptom free for at least 3 days (without fever reducing medication) AND it has been AT LEAST 10 days since my symptoms began.
  • I have been fully vaccinated* .  If not, I agree to wear a mask at all times during interaction with SOB riders, including while congregating at the beginning of a ride, when riding, at rest stops when congregated, and when dispersing, and I also agree to ride behind all other riders at all times.
*For our purposes, people are considered fully vaccinated after having received both the primary series of vaccines AS WELL AS ANY CDC-APPROVED BOOSTER OR BOOSTERS within 3 months of said booster being readily available in the Santa Fe area.  Full vaccination is one week after all your booster shot(s). If you don’t meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated. (previously two weeks after primary vaccine series).

If I do not meet all of the above conditions I will not participate in any group ride.

While the above tries to spell out all the reasons not to ride, if you feel the least bit “under the weather” (fatigued, general malaise) then err on the side of caution for all of us and don’t ride with the group.

Reminder about Registering for Thursday Rides

We still ask that you register / signup for Thursday rides.

It helps us to see how many riders are planning to ride, and if the situation warrants, it allows us to contact you directly via email before the ride.  This does not happen often, but when it does, you will want to know about it.

When you do signup we recommend that you only provide your first name and first initial of your last name.  e.g. Sepp K.  Just in case your local rascals are watching.  The names you provide are online and anyone who happens to go to that page on our website will see the information.  Once the ride day has passed then the registrations are no longer shown.  Probably paranoid on our part but ….

If you have signed up and you find out that you cannot ride or decide not to ride, no worries.  There is no need to tell anyone or to cancel.

Dissertation Research Project

Hello – my name is Larry “Dave” Miller and I am currently working on my PhD in Performance Psychology at Grand Canyon University. The goal of my research project is to understand better how everyday recreational athletes feel about certain performance improvement techniques, specifically mental skills training (visualization, productive self-talk, etc.).

I have already interviewed a wide variety of athletes for my study and I believe the members of your cycling group would also be great participants.

If you might be interested, contact Larry David (no joke) at  (602.Five Six One.3343) or email him at lmiller61 at my.gcu.edu when you have time to connect.

This project and Larry David have no relationship with SantaFeSOBs.  We do not approve or disapprove.  Whatever you do is strictly on your own.

If you previously signed up for A,A- your signup is still good.  If you signed up for B or C those were deleted.

Checked with our permanent staff in LA and they say roads are open.  No smoke.  Could change.  Watch this space.

“Create some Bike related art” workshop

You are in a great position to create some “Words of Wisdom” in the form of trailside art.

Imagine if you could inspire the younger generations who ride the trails with a creation of your own, while at the same time gaining esteem as a useful old geezer in the community.

This workshop is open to any SOB who wants to have a go and will be held on Monday, May 23, from 10-12 noon at Raven Tree Studios, 12 Cayuse Place, SF NM 87508.

Chage in ride start and ride time for Thursday May 19th

Due to air quality concerns in Bandelier and closures, the ride will start at the Agora Center in El Dorado at 9 am.  We will ride south including the loop down to the Lamy Train station and continue south on 285.  Total distance is 40 miles.  Bring plenty of water since it will be warm and windy.

B AND C RIDES START AT CITIES OF GOLD 5/19

Due to road closures and fire danger we are changing our starting point to
Cities of Gold this Thursday  May 19th.  The B ride will do the Espanola Loop
( a good ride before the Century) and the C ride will be going west through the
little town of Nambe.  The website will not be changed, nor will any confirmation
that people who sign up will get. Those will still say Bandelier but the ride will now
be from Cities of Gold and not be the Bandelier loop.

B rides Thursday start at 599

The B group will ride to Galisteo or Madrid and back. The B- group will ride up the West Frontage Road to the Outlet Mall and then around Rancho Viejo. 10 am start at the 599 RR station parking lot off Veterans Highway.

SOB Volunteer Opportunity

Participate in the creation of bicycle artwork for a mural wall beside the Rail Trail in Santa Fe.

SOB’s will have recognition on the wall in the form of a tile plaque.

The wall is on the rail trail with many cyclists, pedestrians, and the rail runner going by.

This is a good opportunity for community engagement and positive public image.

April 21 B and C rides (and A ride)

The B ride leaders think that the state road is open through (not into) the Pueblo and are planning to do the route listed on the website with a B- ride going 30 miles including a stop at Starbucks for coffee and a B ride doing the full 40 miles. At least that is the plan as of this posting. Stay tuned! If nothing further is posted for B rides, the start will be at Black Mesa casino.

edit by BobB:  I am going to stop on Wednesday at the road block and ask if we can cycle thru on Thursday.  I will do a blog post on Wed that you will get Thrs morning regarding whether we are confirmed to start at Black Mesa or if we have to start at Sandia.  This applies to A and all B rides.

Due to the possible uncertainty of the road situation and the fact that only 4 people have signed up for the C ride, it will be changed to Eldorado at the Agora Center and will be a tour of Eldorado, led by Shirley, who has several 20 mile routes she can lead. She and the group will decide which to do on Thursday. Please sign up if you want to do this ride.

Thursday 4/21 A Ride

It looks like NM 313 is still closed to non-tribal members, so a San Felipe start is not possible at this time.
Therefore the A ride will start at the Sandia Rail Runner station, departing at 10:00.

The weather looks pretty good down south, 65° with 7 mph winds at pedal time.
This is the new route:  https://ridewithgps.com/routes/39098273

As a note, only 6 people have signed up for the A ride. If you plan to do any Thursday ride, you must sign up in advance or pay a substantial penalty to the ride leader.

Edwin sends his best to all

In the winter of 2020, the Board of Directors decided to recognize Edwin Crosswhite’s huge contributions to our club. Unfortunately, the pandemic got in the way of our plans, but we were finally able to present this recognition. Here is a picture of Edwin with the Nambe Platter.  The other picture is the  virtual sample, so you can read what’s engraved on the platter.  Edwin was one of the earlier founders of our Club.  He is the one who helped build the solid foundation of our Club.  He trained our Ride Leaders, held classes for kids, encouraged new riders,  with a smile and always enjoyed an after ride beer with his SOB buddies.  We miss you Edwin.  Hope you will ride again!

Sept. SOB Trip

Hi All, I would like to kow who might be interested in a Sept. ride in Colorado.  We go the Tuesday after Labor Day, Sept. 6th to the 10th.  I am proposing Frisco Colorado again for a fixed base ride.  We did ride there about 5 years ago. and everyone, seemed to really have a good time.  For those who would like a couple of days traveling I suggest starting in Frisco, ride there for a day to warm up.  On the second day you will ride to Vail and continue to Leadville for the night, about 55 miles and a fair amount of climbing.  The next day you would ride around Turquise Lake (about 25 miles) and then come back to Frisco another 30 miles.  Spend another night in Frisco and returnnto Santa Fe on Saturday.   Each group would cycle 3 days and have two days of travel.  Let me know if you would be interested and for which group.  I need to start planning it soon.  For now, I just need to know if you are seriously interested.  Judy –  j.costlow@gmail.com

I know it’s a lot to understand …

For your own privacy (SOB club does not care) you may not want to enter your last name when you sign up for a ride, as it is displayed on the website for all to see.  You can re-read the key instructions below.  They are repeated on every ride signup page so you can ignore them moving forward.  I will not edit what has already been entered but you can adjust for the future.

enter your FIRST name and optionally last name initial…..
NOTE: names you enter will be visible to everyone so please do not enter your full last name

Alternate ride on Saturday April 2

We will start from the BLM parking lot (Rancho Viejo Road near Rte 14) at 10:00 AM and ride to Madrid and beyond.  The total distance will be close to 50 miles.  The pace will be moderate (A-) and we do plan to climb Stagecoach Pass.  If you want to ride but don’t want to climb to the top, that is fine. Leaders Christine and Dave Van Dornick

April is coming on the 1st, no foolin’

What does April mean for SOBs?   10am ride starts.  Scheduled Thursday rides begin.

Let’s review.

  1.  Are all your waivers submitted for 2022?  Are you paid up?  As of mid March your membership status was indicated here.  If you paid or waivered since then, it is not reflected on that sheet and you will have to remember what you did or did not do.  I will update the list in mid April.
  2. Ride signup.  Since Covid we have been signing up for rides online before the ride.  We are still doing that.  Go here and read.  At this moment for the first April ride, we have 4 A riders, no B riders and 7 C riders.  Note the text about ride cancellations if there are less than 5 signed up by the day before the ride.

For ride leaders, time to sign up to lead May rides.  Click and submit your form.

April 2 B ride (ad hoc)

This Saturday will be April and the SOB season is about to begin. Let’s meet in Lamy, cycling to Galisteo (7 miles) then on 42 to 14 (10 miles). This is about 34 miles round trip.  The new roll time will be 10:00.  Let others know you will be joining this ride.
There is an option to follow the SOB listed meet up at DeVargas, the route to be determined by the group. A ride leader would be needed to make it an insured SOB ride.  Note the new roll time is 10:00. Please respond via the email list letting others know you will ride from DeVargas. If you are not on the email list, contact:  lynnpickard1 at yahoo.com.

Protocols for changing rides during the riding season (April-October)

If any ride leader wants to organize an ad hoc (i.e., not a Thursday) SOB ride during the riding season (April-October) on a different day, place, or time than is posted on the SOB website, please post it on the blog as soon as it is organized and then again two days before the ride. (And it might not hurt to post more than once or twice, as well as notify your email lists.)
If anyone else wants to organize a ride, or if it’s not organized by a ride leader and posted as above, nothing prevents you from doing that, but it won’t be an SOB ride.
The reason for these protocols is that our insurer requires SOB rides that they insure to be “conducted and supervised” by the club.
The ride director and assistants have decided that Thursday rides should not be changed in the manner described above.

Sun-lover’s rejoice

In lieu of riding in the clouds and 45% chance of rain on Tuesday,  you may consider riding Monday 10.30 DeVargas.  There will be at least of couple of others there at 10.30 on Monday.

Gravel Grinders Overnighter Mar 26

.

Hi all, don’t know if the group knows that there is a local group of bikepackers that have been doing overnight campouts every month all year long. They call the trips “Sub-24’s” because they are done in less than 24 hours, quick ride out, fun campout, quick ride back. There is one this Saturday leaving at 4 pm from the Railyard and going down to Diablo Canyon campground, about 14 mile mostly gravel ride. That is a pretty typical ride distance to the campsite. As always, everyone is welcome. All sorts or bikes and camping kits seem to show up,  From fatbikes to gravel bikes, from panniers to full bikepacking bags to a sleeping bag strapped to the handlebars and a backpack. Always seems to be a great group of guys and gals at the campouts. Anyway, Rich and I are planning on going, it’s supposed to be warm Saturday and Saturday night, you might want to give it a try. I have been to half a dozen or so of the campouts, give a shout if you have any questions,

Cheers,

Ed

March 26 B Ride

Per Denise M: There is interest in cycling from the Galisteo to Stanley.  It’s an 18 miles gradual uphill climb and an easy fun roll down on the return.  Meet at the Galisteo church parking lot ready to ride at 10:30.  Not sure who will show up at DeVargas.

March 19 B ride

Per Denise M:  Saturday looks like a great day to take on a favorite ride the Espanola 28-mile loop. Meet at the Cities of Gold parking lot ready to ride at 10:30. Please notify the group you are riding.  However if you miss posting  your participation you are welcomed join the ride. Not sure who will show up at DeVargas.

Attention Ride Leaders

At the ride leaders meeting on February 18, it was suggested that all ride leaders re-read the ride leaders manual posted on the SOB website as a review. Please pay particular attention to the portions of the manual that address first aid and the pre-ride announcement checklist. Of course, not each item on the checklist needs to be addressed at every ride, but at a minimum ride leaders should welcome new riders, make any necessary announcements about road conditions, and select a few others.
Your club will try to put together another formal ride leaders training when Covid protocols, site availability, and safety allow this. In the meantime, please try to recruit new ride leaders. They can take an abbreviated course put together during the pandemic and get certified that way. Send a message on the website if you are interested.

Ski Hill NMDOT seeking input on repaving

This is an opportunity for cyclists to give their input to a cycling route that begs for improvement.
Also on March 3, today when you read this, at 6pm an online public meeting hosted by the NMDOT to discuss a reconstruction project on NM 475 from Bishops Lodge to the SF Ski Basin. Meeting is intended to inform public of plans and to solicit input. This is great opportunity for NM cyclists to provide input on what they consider a safe riding environment. Meeting is free but participants must pre-register. Go to NMDOT website at www.dot.nm.gov and click on link for events/public meetings.

Happy March (soon)

In March, Thrs ad hoc rides start at the Outlet Mall as does the April 14 club ride.  FWIW.

Let’s start out in March with a 10.30 ride start time.  We’ll adjust it if the weather and the time change dictate.

Note that this coming Tuesday is March 1, so officially March, so doing the math, what time will the ad hoc rides start ???????

Warmer on Sunday Feb 27

If you are interested we will meet at El Camino Acad at 11am on Sunday.  Saturday ride still on for those who like the cold.

New Bike rack for e-bikes

Wirecutter, a product evaluation service for consumers, and carried in NY Times, has an article reporting on evaluations of several bike racks. One is designed for e-bikes to ease loading heavier bikes on vehicles. This rack is mounted to a trailer hitch on the car. The rack is not cheap–$850 at Amazon and REI. Illustration is not available in this report. Go to Thule website: www.thule.com   Thule lists price at $899

Whether you need to transport heavier bikes, such as some electric models, or you just want a rack that’s easy to load and store, the Thule EasyFold XT 2 is hard to beat. It’s one of the most expensive models we’ve tested, but its premium price includes luxury features that also make it one of the best overall racks we’ve tested. The EasyFold XT can hold bikes up to 65 pounds each, and it comes with a foldable ramp that lets you roll bikes onto it instead of having to lift them up. It’s lighter than other heavy-duty racks, and when it’s off the vehicle, it folds up to the size of a large airline carry-on bag. The EasyFold is also quick to install and lock to the vehicle, and integrated cable locks let you secure bikes to the rack. The EasyFold holds bikes by the frame, rather than by the wheels, however, which some riders don’t prefer, and the clamps can be a little awkward to use. It fits 1¼-inch and 2-inch hitch receivers.

Santa Fe Century / SOB Partnership

The SOBs and the Santa Fe Century are partnering this year to support the Century.   You can volunteer to help the Century (details below) as well as do whatever ride(s) you want to do. IF you volunteer your registration is FREE!  You do not have to choose one or the other.  You can do both.   Or mix and match.

Information on the Century is contained here.  This year the ride(s) is/are on May 21 and May 22.  There is a new set of 3 gravel rides on Saturday and the usual set of road rides on Sunday.

Here are the options for volunteering AND doing one of the road rides:

Shifts are two hours long.  Signup links are below.

Thursday: Packet Stuffing at or near venue in the Railyard, location TBD, 10 am-3pm.  NOTE:  If enough SOB’s volunteer for May 19 we may create an additional local ride for that date so folks will have more time to help.

Friday: Registration 2 pm-7:30pm at venue in the Railyard, location TBD.  Registration is open from 4-7, but we would need volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up.

Saturday: Registration 3:30 pm-7:30pm at venue in the Railyard, location TBD.  Registration is open from 4-7, but we would need volunteers to help with set-up and clean-up.

As a volunteer who also wants to ride you will get a free registration as well as a volunteer T-shirt or hat and a water bottle.

As a volunteer who is not going to ride or who has already registered the Century will give a donation to the SOBs and you will also get a volunteer T-shirt or hat and a water bottle.

Also the Century would like to recruit one or two people to join their board.  These would be people who are passionate about the Century, and have an interest in helping in terms of volunteer coordination, fundraising, or helping with event organization in some manner.  We will forward your contact information to Mike McCalla if you indicate interest in joining the board.

Add your name for better biking!

Do you want a future that is better for biking?

Last year, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg called traffic safety a “national crisis” and said the Biden Administration would release a National Roadway Safety Strategy by January 2022.

With only a few days left, the League is eagerly awaiting the administration’s strategy for safety. As president, Biden and his team can help us accelerate change on the ground.

Add your voice: ask President Biden to make bike safety a priority »

The League wants to see a National Roadway Safety Strategy that prioritizes safety for the most vulnerable road users like people who bike, walk, and use wheelchairs.

We want a strategy that fixes existing streets by redesigning them for connectivity and slower speeds, while ensuring new roads are built as Complete Streets designed for all the different ways people get around — like biking!

We want a future that makes biking safer, easier, and more accessible for more people.

Yes, I want a future that is better for biking »
Join the League in sharing our vision for a National Roadway Safety Strategy that includes:

  • A Safe System Approach. That means putting safety at the center of all transportation projects to prevent crashes.
  • No more silos. Multiple federal agencies impact traffic safety and a whole-of-government approach would recognize this and engage a team of agencies to implement a Safe System Approach.
  • More than just congressionally approved funding. Together, advocates pushed Congress to fund a historic increase in funding for biking and walking, including a Safe Streets and Roads for All program. We are excited about the program, but we hope this strategy is larger than that.

Does this sound like the future of transportation you want for your community and our country? Join the League in sharing our vision for better biking with the Biden Administration.

The Soul of a Cyclist

Submitted for your consideration.

A message from Nuno Tavares, director and producer of the film Soul of a Cyclist.

“Happy New Year! I hope with a lot of cycling included

I am the director and producer of the film “The Soul of a Cyclist” and one of the missions that I had when I’ve started this independent project was to convey a very positive message about cycling to a broad audience.

But, as I like to say, this is not a movie about bicycles only, but about the importance of appreciating the simplest (and most precious) things in our life like friendship and appealing for a sustainable life. In the end the viewer also gets an urge to ride a bike (It’s not me who says it ).

I am happy to mention that this film has already been selected to 33 international film festivals around the world (9 of them in the USA), had 7 awards for best film (including Winner of Best International Film at 2021 DC Independent Film Festival in Washington DC) and 3 honorable mentions (full list of festivals and awards available at film’s website https://en.almadeciclista.com/).

You can watch the English version of the film and its trailer here https://vimeo.com/ondemand/soulofacyclist

So, I’m launching right now the film independently and if Santa Fe Seniors On Bikes could help to reach a broader audience, and share it on your social networks and other communication tools you have at your hand, helping spreading the word, I would be very, very grateful for it. In a world dominated by the big entertainment companies, with their own agenda, there isn’t much room for a film like this other than through independent distribution. What a pity, because these are the messages that we have to spread, more and more, among human beings, in order to try to become better.

And wherever the film goes, your main message, your mission to promote and develop cycling goes as well. So, I believe we’ve a great synergy here.

If you would like to watch the entire film, I will be more than happy to send you a free private online screener.

Thank you very much in advance for your attention.

With my best regards,
-Nuno Tavares ( nuno.mc.tavares@gmail.com )

Bonus A ride – Monday DeVargas 11am

Warmer, full sun, possibly a tad more wind vs Tuesday.   Montoya’s, Tano, Barranca, Gonz, Joe’s, OSFT, Rabbit, CCR, COFFEE, back.  Aboot 35.

Not canceling Tuesday, just a choice.  Or both.

Additional A Ride Monday – MLK Day

Some of us cannot ride on Tuesday so we plan to ride Monday.  Same time (11am), same place (DeVargas).  This does not change or cancel the regular Tuesday A ride.  Could be less windy.  Just sayin’

All Things Covid

  1.  Change of Covid Waiver.  The Board has decided that fully vaccinated, for SOB purposes, requires a booster shot.  Exact language below:

I have been fully vaccinated* .
Full vaccination is one week after your booster shot. If you don’t meet these requirements, you are NOT fully vaccinated. (previously two weeks after primary vaccine series).

2.  Since this change was made after many of you have already submitted your 2022 Covid waiver, this notice will serve to modify your waiver as indicated above.  If you disagree with this change, you may withdraw your waiver (at any time) by sending a message to admin at santafesobs.com and stating that you wish to withdraw your Covid waiver.  Withdrawing your waiver will make you ineligible to ride in any of our groups.

3.  As you know, omicron is everywhere.  As a reminder: Please, if you feel the slightest bit unwell  (sniffle, headache, over tired, achy, temperature, what have you) DO NOT RIDE WITH THE GROUP.  Thanks for being considerate to us oldsters.

A Gravel ride on Sunday

Gravel ride starting from the Agoro center in Eldorado at 1 PM.  We will head towards the Rail Trail and potentially do some single-track riding near the Rail Trail spurs.  Co-Leaders Christine Van Dornick and John Vellioux.

Afghan Refugees Coming to Santa Fe

As most of you are aware, Afghan refugees are to be settled in Santa Fe.  Some people are coming with families, others as singles.  The number of people expected is around 100.  A huge hurtle in resettlement is housing.  The newcomers will probably not have cars, so there is a need for casitas and apartments with some access to public transportation.  Longer term housing is preferable, but short-term crisis housing is also needed.  The rent range is up to around $1200 for larger living spaces, and lower rents are of course preferable.  Lutheran Family Services is actively working to help the new arrivals find jobs so that they will quickly be self-sufficient.  Families are arriving with only 24 hour notice to LFS, so housing is being set up in anticipation.  If anyone has bicycles to donate, they will be greatly appreciated! And tax deductible.  Please contact me by email danydena@gmail.com  or text 505 310 1646, and I will pass your info on to LFS.  Thank you, Dena Ross

Happy New Year – Membership Information – Jan ride information – Thursday

Time to join for 2022.  Please read this information carefully.

CAREFULLY read the part about whether or not you are already paid up for 2022.  If you double pay again we are not going to track that anymore.  Regardless of whether or not you are already paid up, we still need both waivers from everyone.

All January rides start at 11.00.  Thursday January rides start at Museum Hill unless communicated (example below) thru this blog.   Tues and Sat rides start at their usual locations unless otherwise communicated via this blog.

Energetic riders:  Thursday Jan 6 start at Sandia RR at 11 am.or start at 10.30 in Bernalillo (see below).  We will all meet at Sandia at 11 and do the rest of the ride en groupe.

How about we meet for a 10:30 ride start at: Sandoval County Economic Development · 264 S Camino Del Pueblo, Bernalillo, NM 87004    Ride route will be: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38102801
Coffee stop mid ride at Slow Burn Coffee and I’m making a coffee stop at Whitings on the way back for some beans.  For the Sandia starters, of course there is an opportunity to add on miles at the end (ha ha).

2022 elephant rock’s last event, FYI

The Elephant Rock one day bike ride held in Castle Rock, CO is hosting its last event/festival in June of 2022. This 35 year old ride is coming to an end. I’ve ridden the 44 mile ride twice, attended the associated festival, camped there and it all was great. Good ride. So if you’ve thought about doing this ride (I know other SOBs have attended it) then 2022 is your last chance to do the event. Covid dependent.
Also Roll Massif has been bought out by Outside Events Cycling Series. So the title of some rides may change. FYI

Tx Hill country in March

Conversations have started re: riding in the Tx hill country in mid March for a week. Yes it’s only December but it’s never too early to begin planning bike tours/trips. Obviously contingent on covid etc. Something to think about on these cold winter nights. Nothing concrete yet but talk is starting. I’ll post more as more info becomes available. Feds may support e-bikes

From Los Angeles Times,12-7-2021

A battery assist for e-bikes in tax credit proposal
bloomberg
Over the last decade, the U.S. has spent about $10 billion subsidizing the purchase of electric vehicles through tax credits. Not one penny of that, however, has gone to the world’s top- selling and fastest-growing form of electric vehicle, a dynamic people-mover more efficient than any Tesla or Nissan Leaf.
That, of course, is the electric bicycle.
But under the “Build Back Better” spending bill, which passed the House last month and awaits action in the Senate, e-bikes could, for the first time, get a push from the federal government. Tucked among the bill’s more than 2,000 pages is a tax credit of up to $900 for e-bikes.
If the incentive survives intact, e-bike makers, which lobbied for its inclusion, will be taking a (battery-assisted) victory lap.
“Tables will have turned if this goes through,” said Mike Radenbaugh, chief executive of the startup Rad Power Bikes. “We think that e-bikes should ultimately see a much bigger set of support … but we’re really excited to see us at least heading in the right direction.”
It’s a major milestone for an industry that scarcely existed a decade ago.
“The fact that there’s an e-bike incentive in a federal climate-slash-catch-all bill is remarkable considering that a few years ago, a lot of folks didn’t know what e-bikes were,” said Christopher Cherry, a professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
As it stands, the bill provides a credit of 30% for up to $3,000 spent on a new e-bike, excluding bikes that cost more than $4,000. (The credits phase out according to household income beginning at $75,000 for a single taxpayer.) This is a reduction from the original proposal; in the bill that was introduced to the House, the credit covered 30% of spending up to $5,000 on bikes costing as much as $8,000.
“That was a blow for us,” said Steve Boyd, general manager of North America for Tern Bicycles, whose most expensive cargo e-bike costs more than $9,000. Under the original price cap, all but one of Tern’s models would have qualified for the credit; now all but a few are excluded.
The cuts to the credit were a natural part of the process of getting the bill through the House, according to Noa Banayan, director of federal affairs at PeopleForBikes, a trade association that lobbies on behalf of bike makers.
“Of course, we want the most amount of credit to be available to the most amount of people,” Banayan said, “but we are excited for anything that puts e-bikes on the federal map, because we see it as just a first step.”
For Rad Power, which sells its e-bikes online at prices ranging from $1,000 to $2,000, the lower cap is a perfect fit.
“Most e-bike companies will probably not see a huge benefit, but I think Rad’s an outlier in that way,” Radenbaugh said.
Data from NPD Group, which tracks sales at bike shops and outdoor stores, show that e-bike purchases tend to cluster at the top and bottom of the scale. Almost 60% of bikes sold in the 12-month period that ended in September cost either less than $500 or more than $3,500.
The fastest growth, however, is happening in the middle: Unit sales of bikes priced between $1,500 and $2,000 grew during that period at a rate of 176% over the previous 12 months.
There’s scant academic research, Cherry said, on how price affects consumer preferences in the e-bike market. He and his collaborator, John MacArthur of Portland State University, are working on a study that addresses these questions.
In the absence of data, Congress is left to guess at the level of incentive that will convince the most people to buy e-bikes, while spending as little as possible.
“We don’t know what that sweet spot is,” MacArthur said.
For now, Congress seems to be taking the approach that it’s better to prevent a well-to-do weekend warrior from using the credit to buy a joyride than it is to help a potential cargo-bike customer get over the sticker shock.
For some e-bike brands, that may mean adjusting prices to fit the tax code.
“If the limits stay the same,” said Boyd at Tern, “and we have a bike that is going to work out normally at $4,200, then maybe we end up at $3,999.”
