Regarding Alan Shapiro’s message about the exclusion of e-bikes on group rides, I take strong exception to banning them. A ride leader’s true abilities are not measured by their type of bike, but by their qualities in supporting all riders in the group. [1]
For me and many of my peers, e-bikes have been incredibly helpful in maintaining our health and fitness as we age or recover from injuries. In my case, now 84, I had to switch to an e-bike six years ago following heart issues that required two stents. [1]
Ultimately, ride leaders already make choices based on the specific route and the abilities of their participants, which is a continuous learning process. Therefore, I completely disagree with the suggestion to exclude e-bikes from any ride in any of our SOB groups.
