Fantastic news today for Bike Santa Fe and Santa Fe’s bicycle community: the shoulders on NM 14 between the 599 interchange (at the Allsup’s) to Lone Butte are going to be fixed. NMDOT District 5 Engineer Paul Brasher called me today to confirm the news in the press release (image attached). Work begins this coming Monday and should wrap on Thursday, June 20.
Last October I transmitted an Inspection of Public Records Act request to NMDOT for this paving project as it failed to properly pave the shoulders on this important bicycle route. On behalf of Bike Santa Fe I then wrote an eight page letter with photos (attached) to then New Mexico Transportation Secretary Tom Church asking for corrective action. Earlier this year District 5 Engineer Paul Brasher contacted me to follow up on that request and we’ve had an ongoing constructive phone dialogue and email exchange. Paul said today that the new shoulder paving should cover all of the old shoulder paving all the way to the grass. Paul is aware that GFNY Santa Fe is using this route on Sunday, June 23, and the project should be done in time for that.
Thanks to those that wrote NMDOT and Sec. Church in support of my efforts: Lynn Pickardfor the Santa Fe Seniors On Bikes, Laura Crawford for the Bozeman-based Adventure Cycling Association, and Carl Gable, Sidney Redner, and Robert Mang who wrote as individuals. There may have been others, but those are the ones that I am aware of.
Paul Brasher was terrific to work with and I am most grateful for his willingness to engage on this issue and make it happen. Thanks to Catherine Rivard (my wife and an attorney) who worked closely with me in this effort. Also thanks to Erick Aune with the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization and NMDOT Assistant District Engineer David Quintana for their guidance along the way.
This has been a long journey to get these shoulders fixed and I could not be happier for bicyclists that use this state highway.
Best regards,
