This Smart Cycling Class has three different components.

1) Is the online portion found at: http://www.bikeed.org/courseIntro.aspx . This needs to be completed prior the classroom time.     You will need to register to enter.  By registering, you automatically have a 2019 membership with Bike Santa Fe.

2) The classroom session on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 6 pm – 10 pm is at the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) office (upstairs at 500 Market Street, Suite 200, above REI in the Rail Yard).

3) The on-bike portion is Saturday, Sept. 28. We will do drills in the parking lot in the morning. Practicing bike skills such as scanning/signaling, and also emergency maneuvers such as quick stop, instant turn, and rock dodge).  For the on-bike session, HELMETS ARE REQUIRED. We will return to the MPO office for the written portion of the exam before lunch and the afternoon ride.

Please review the curriculum online at your convenience. It is very important that you actually do review/study the material before the class on Sept. 26. This class will be primarily to review areas that need clarification, so make notes & questions as you do the online portion, about what you may want to cover more thoroughly.  We’ll practice fixing a flat tire if there is a need.

It is advisable to bring your helmet and bike to the Sept. 26 session, so we can check your helmet fit and show you how to wear it correctly. We would also like you to be able demonstrate some of the skills from the online course with your own bicycle (e.g. “ABC Quick check”).

Those who may be completing the on-bike portion from a previous class are welcome and encouraged to attend the Thursday evening portion for review.

Saturday afternoon will consist of actually riding on city streets and using your new skills (hopefully not the emergency ones), finishing with the on-road exam. Usually we finish this up about 3:30.  Time is available for further discussion or review, if you want, until 4:30.

There is a series of very short videos (1-2 minutes each) to review at: http://bikeleague.org/ridesmartvideos. You can also review much of what is in the online course at: http://bikeleague.org/content/smart-cycling-tips-0

The on-bike session,  Saturday, Sept 28 will be at the parking lot of the South Capital Complex (State office building) adjacent to South Capital Rail Runner Station, starting at 9 am.  Dress appropriately in layers.  While it can be cool when we start, you will warm up quickly.
